General Program Information
Is my child dyslexic and does he/she really need educational intervention?
Dyslexia is an umbrella term for a spectrum of difficulties associated with reading, spelling, math and comprehension. Need for educational intervention is most often determined by the standardized test batteries we administer at The Reading & Language Center. Testing results and subsequent recommendations are presented following the completed evaluation. For more information go to assessment.
What makes The Reading & Language Center different?
The Reading & Language Center provides a wide array of services, which makes it possible for a family to receive comprehensive services in one location. See our list of programs.
How quickly do students see results?
Student results vary widely in response to a number of factors including their level of performance upon entrance, as well as their level of motivation and family support. Results are also factor of frequency of intervention: in most cases, more sessions produce faster results. However, it is important to consider a child’s endurance when scheduling treatment. Four hours of treatment will not be helpful if the child is not able to focus for more than one hour. We consult with families to determine the best strategy for realizing lasting success.
Do you provide group instruction?
No. We provide every student with one-to-one, personalized instruction.
Do students always work with the same clinician?
Not necessarily. Students have a regular standing schedule; it may be beneficial for students not to work with the same person each session, particularly if that student is scheduled for more than one session per day. Depending on the circumstances some students do work with the same clinician. However, a different clinician can bring new energy to a session, which helps students to remain engaged.
Testing and Assessment
Why do you test students before commencing services?
Administering standardized tests helps us develop a treatment plan that is specific to a student’s needs. The Reading & Language Center offers an array of diagnostic assessments to identify the source of a student’s struggle.

My child has been tested repeatedly—is testing required?
We recommend having your child tested at our center, as it helps to present a complete picture of a student’s learning strengths and weaknesses. We will take into consideration recent testing by other professionals, and determine if the information is sufficient enough to develop a treatment plan. However, it should be noted that under these circumstances we would not have the added benefit of the tester’s general observations, which can be significant to identifying and alleviating challenges for the student that are outside the scope of the test battery that was administered.
How long will the testing last?
Average testing duration ranges from 1-3 hours, depending on the type and number of batteries administered. Students are allowed breaks, as needed.
Do you always recommend service following testing and assessment?
No. Occasionally, we see students whose testing results indicate that they are capable of normal academic performance, as compared to their peers. If we do not feel that our services could help meet the particular needs of a student, then we may be able to help you find an appropriate alternative. The needs of the students are always our top priority.

How much does testing cost?
The test battery administered and how comprehensive these tests are determine testing fees. A partial testing may be administered if a child has already had outside testing done. All testing fees include the testing, the analysis, and the posttest consultation during which we will review the results and present our recommendations to you. If a formal written report is required, additional fees are assessed.
How often do students need to attend?
In order to achieve optimal results, each student needs to come regularly and consistently. The frequency of attendance affects rate of progress. We work with families to develop a treatment plan that meets their child’s needs.
How long are the sessions?
Student sessions are typically 55 minutes long. The length of time for a speech therapy session may vary.
Can I schedule sessions week-to-week?
This is not possible due to the number of students attending The Reading & Language Center. Students that come to the Center have their regular schedule, which does not allow for week-to-week scheduling.
What is your cancellation policy?
Due to the fact that hours are reserved in advance for a student, missed or cancelled sessions are billed. However, we will try to reschedule your appointment within two weeks, but this is not guaranteed and solely depends on what is available at the time.
